A roller screw actuator differs from a ball screw by replacing the recirculating balls with threaded rollers, which are then toothed at each end in order to fit with gear rings at the end of the nut unit. This nut also features a threaded design, and the result is that the rollers achieve an orbit around the nut, in which they also rotate continuously on their axis. The greater surface area contact of the roller screw means that a higher dynamic load capacity may be achieved, whilst the threading of the rollers means that such higher loads require less input torque.
